Itsmyluckyday worked a half-mile on the drying-out Monmouth Park main track in :47 1/5 between the third and fourth races May 12 as he prepares for his next start in the May 18 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) at Pimlico Race Course.
"Perfect. He did just what I wanted," said trainer Eddie Plesa Jr., who conditions the son of Lawyer Ron for Trilogy Stables and Laurie Plesa. "I caught him galloping out in :59 and change. I couldn't have asked for it to work out any better."
Plesa said Itsmyluckyday will ship to Pimlico May 14. Itsmyluckyday is coming off a disappointing 15th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) in the Churchill Downs slop May 4.
Under windy and sunny conditions at Monmouth following heavy rain the day before, Itsmyluckyday clicked off a quarter in :23 4/5 on a track rated fast before finishing the half-mile under a very still Elvis Trujillo in :23 2/5. He galloped out strongly, getting five furlongs in :59 3/5.
"That's him, that's the way he works," Plesa said. "He did it easy, he did it all on his own. I'm quite happy."
Trujillo rode itsmyluckyday in the Derby. Hall of Famer John Velazquez has been named to ride him in the Preakness.
Itsmyluckyday kicked off his racing career at Monmouth, breaking his maiden at second asking June 23. Since then, he has captured four stakes, including the Holy Bull (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park Jan. 26 over champion Shanghai Bobby .
Prior to the Kentucky Derby, Itsmyluckyday was runner-up to Orb in the Florida Derby. Overall, he has five wins from 11 starts and earnings of $625,600.
Bred in Kentucky by Liberation Farm and Brandywine Farm, Itsmyluckyday is out of the stakes-placed mare Viva La Slew by Doneraile Court. He arrived at Monmouth from Churchill May 7.
