Overbrook Farm's Surfside worked six furlongs from the gate at Churchill Downs on Thursday in company with WHAS-11 Stakes winner Unbridled Time. The D. Wayne Lukas-trained filly covered the distance in 1:12 1/5, handily, with Pat Day in the irons. Unbridled Time went in 1:13 1/5 under exercise rider Stacy Maker.
"She's getting close to a race," said assistant trainer Mike Maker. "There's no decision yet on exactly where we'll run her."
Surfside has been sidelined since finishing fifth against males in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) but has been working well for several weeks. Her work on Thursday, despite starting from the gate, was the fastest of three at the distance on the day.
Unbridled Time finished last as the second wagering choice in his most recent race, the Futurity Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park. The Lukas trainee, who finished third in the Kentucky Breeders' Cup (gr. III) in May, returned from a long layoff in the Futurity. The next start for the 2-year-old son of Unbridled's Song may come in the Lane's End Breeders' Futurity (gr. II) at Keeneland on Oct. 8. The Ohio-bred won his debut race at Keeneland in April.
Surfside's 3/4-sister Sanibel Island also worked at Churchill on Thursday. The Overbrook Farm 2-year-old breezed four furlongs in :49 over the fast main track.
In other Thursday works, 2-year-old filly Gold Mover worked five furlongs in a bullet :59 3/5 at Belmont Park. The work by the undefeated Mark Hennig trainee was the quickest of 34 at the distance on the day. 3-year-old Saudi Poetry put in a bullet work over a fast track at Santa Anita. The Bob Baffert trainee, who has won her two most recent starts after finishing third in the Hollywood Oaks (gr. II), went six furlongs in 1:12, handily, the fastest of 27 six furlong works. Puerto Madero, cross nominated to both the Meadowlands Cup Handicap (gr. II) and Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap (gr. III), completed a mile work at Santa Anita in 1:39 3/5. Cetewayo put in a four-furlong breeze in :53 over good turf at Tapeta Farm.
