Boston Bull wins the Cowdin at Belmont on Sunday.
Dogwood Stable's Boston Bull was easily the best in Sunday's 80th running of the Cowdin Stakes (gr. III) for 2-year-olds, winning by about five lengths at Belmont Park.
Sent off the 4-5 favorite in a field reduced to four by sloppy track conditions, the son of Boston Harbor, won for the second time in three starts. The final time for the 6 1/2 furlongs was 1:16.37.
Trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by John Velazquez, Boston Bull broke in second and ran with Paris Adventure through fractions of :22 2/5 and :45 1/5 for the half-mile before taking control.
"He loved the mud," said Velazquez. "It was like he was running on a dry track. He's coming along with each race and I think he'll
go longer."
Roaring Fever made a mild bid in the stretch before settling for second. Wacky For Love rallied from far behind to take third.
Boston Bull earned $64,141 for Cot Campbell's Dogwood Stable. He is now 2-1-0 from three starts with earnings of $100,141. His only blemish was a neck defeat in his debut.
"We planned to stalk the speed, but he broke so sharp that Johnny just let him run," Pletcher said. "He was impressive today and I think he'll go longer. He galloped out well and has been getting better with each race. He made a few mistakes in his debut,
but he's learned from them.
"We weren't planning on using this as a prep for the (Breeders' Cup) Juvenile, but I don't want to rule anything out until I talk to Mr. Campbell," Pletcher added.
Boston Bull paid $3.60 and $2.40. Roaring Fever returned $31.0. There was no show wagering. The $2 exacta was $7.90.
