Trainer Ron Ellis and owner Nick Alexander are the newest members of the Thoroughbred Owners of California Board of Directors.
Ellis and Alexander were elected by the TOC membership, the organization announced June 22, along with incumbents Billy Morey, George Todaro, Michael Wellman, and Jack Owens.
All were elected to three-year terms except for Owens, who is to serve a one-year term. The new board officially takes office July 1. The TOC’s first board meeting of the new fiscal year is July 19 in Del Mar.
Ellis has been training since 1980 and has also served as a racing commentator for Fox TV Network and TVG. Among his many stakes winners are Twice the Vice, Exotic Wood, Pirates Revenge, Include Me Out, Benchmark, Rail Trip, Declans Moon, Don't Get Mad, and Buzzards Bay.
Alexander, a native of Southern California, is the owner of Nick Alexander Imports. He has raced Thoroughbreds for 35 years, including graded stakes winner Grazen. He also runs a horse ranch in Santa Ynez.
Morey, Todaro, and Wellman first joined the TOC board in in 2012. Owens was re-elected to the board in 2012 having previously served several terms beginning with the initial TOC election. He also served as chairman in 2001-03, 2004-05, and in 2011.
The TOC reported that a total of 7,471 ballots were mailed out to eligible voters, and 1,497 qualifying ballots were received. The complete vote tally is available for viewing on TOC’s website at www.toconline.com.
The newly elected directors join Madeline Auerbach, Bob Baffert, Dennis Cardoza, Mark Dedomenico, Ed Moger, Mike Pegram, John Sadler, Pablo Suarez, and Kathy Walsh in comprising the TOC’s 2013-14 board.
TOC is the official organization serving Thoroughbred owners in the state.
