Turf sprint specialist Texas Glitter, with Jerry Bailey aboard, tied the world record for five furlongs on the turf of :54 4/5 in winning the $100,000 Calder Turf Sprint Handicap Saturday.
The 6-year-old son of Glitterman won this race last year when it was part of the track's Summit of Speed program in July. Saturday, he tied the turf record set by Heckofaralph in the 1998 Calder Turf Sprint and co-held by Klassy Briefcase at Hollywood Park and Shananie's Boss and Tsunami Spangler at Monmouth.
The speedy filly Flying Birdie, who was being stalked by Ghostly Numbers, set the early pace. Heavily-favored Texas Glitter, with jockey Jerry Bailey aboard, was never far behind and he made his move in the stretch to win convincingly by 1 3/4 lengths.
Texas Glitter, owned in partnership by Vinery Stable, D. Swartz and M. Ryan, won for the 19th time in 35 tries and pushed his career earnings to more than $700,000. The Florida bred is trained by todd Pletcher. Assistant Mike McCarthy saddled the winner for Pletcher.
Ghostly Numbers finished second, 3/4-length ahead of Petrina Above, a 7-year-old mare. Flying Birdie, a 4-year-old filly, held on for fourth.
Texas Glitter returned $3.40 for the win.
