TVG to Televise Calder's Festival of the Sun

TVG will present live coverage of tomorrow's 11th annual Calder "Festival of the Sun" from Calder Race Course in Miami. Topping the $1.65 million nine-stakes card are the Grade III, $200,000 Calder Derby, the $200,000 Calder Oaks and the $400,000 colt and filly divisions of the Florida Stallion Stakes for juveniles.

The Calder Derby, a 1 1/8-miles race on the turf, has attracted double stakes winner Miesque's Approval, trained by William Mott. Also expected are Union Place and Oklahoma Derby winner The Judge Sez Who, the latter coming off a fourth place finish in last month's Super Derby. Another Mott entry, the two-time stakes-winner Maliziosa, is scheduled to run in the Oaks, also a nine-furlong test on the grass for fillies.

The In Reality Division of the Florida Stallion Stakes (two-year-old colts) is a 1 1/16-miles race. Looking to sweep the three-race colt open division is Lawbook. His main challenger will be Trust N Luck. In the My Dear Girl Division (two-year-old fillies), also a 1 1/16-miles race, the favorite should be Ivanavinalot, winner of four stakes this year.

In three other "Festival of the Sun" stakes races, 2001 champions Best of the Rest, Coolbythepool, and Texas Glitter will return to defend their titles, with Best of the Rest taking on High Ideal, Sir Bear and Sea of Tranquility in the $100,000 Spend a Buck Handicap; Coolbythepool topping a field of seven in the $100,000 Shocker T. Handicap; and Texas Glitter serving as the favorite in the $100,000 Calder Turf Sprint Handicap. The Spend A Buck and Shocker T. are 1 1/16-mile races, the former for three-year-olds-and-up, the latter for fillies & mares three-and-up, while the Turf Sprint is a five-furlong race.
