Kingdom Bay, the first New Zealand-bred stallion to become New Zealand's champion sire, was euthanized Oct. 8 at age 21 at Trelawney Stud. The decision to put the stallion down came after veterinary treatment given to a deep-seated, painful hind leg infection proved to ineffective.
"Kingdom Bay was the nicest stallion you could ever envisage working with, a horse truly without a bad bone in his body," said Brent Taylor of Trelawney. "He had everything broodmare owners look for--a top race record, a good pedigree, strong conformation, and the ability to pass on both his racing class and his brilliant temperament."
As a racehorse, Kingdom Bay was a group I winner and finished in the top three in 26 of his 37 starts.
Kingdom Bay was New Zealand's champion sire in the 1993-94 and 1995-96 seasons, becoming in the process the first horse bred or to have raced in New Zealand to take out this premier stallion award.
Kingdom Bay was buried on the farm under an oak tree alongside the great Foxbridge and Alcimedes.
