Jockey Heberto Castillo Jr. was taken to North Shore University Hospital after his mount, A Moment in Dixie, ducked into the rail during the stretch run of the ninth and final race Friday afternoon at Belmont Park.
Castillo and A Moment in Dixie were on the lead in midstretch when the filly, a 3-year-old daughter of Dixie Brass, ducked into the portable rail on the Widener Turf Course and tumbled. Dancethebluesaway and jockey Dale Whittaker, trailing on the inside, brushed Castillo, who had crawled back onto the course.
Castillo was conscious when he was taken to North Shore to be treated for a laceration to his forehead and for further observation.
Flying Zee Stable's A Moment in Dixie, trained by Philip Serpe, ran off after the accident. She suffered extensive trauma to the left side of her neck. She was later euthanized.
