James Tafel LLC's Lakenheath, winner by a head in the
Arlington Matron Handicap (gr. III) at Arlington Park on Labor Day, breezed a half mile at Keeneland Thursday in :50, according to Arlington Park-based trainer Gene Cilio.
Lakenheath, who left Arlington Park Monday, is in final preparations for her start in Sunday's Overbrook Spinster (gr. I) at the Lexington oval.
"She actually probably went a little faster than that," said Cilio, "but it was dark and the clockers couldn't see her very well. She's pretty well fit, anyway, and we got what we wanted from her. She's doing great."
Cilio assistants Andy Hansen and Billy Durkin were at Keeneland to supervise Thursday's move by the 4-year-old Lakenheath.
"I'll be going down there on Friday," Cilio said.
Other projected starters in the $500,000 Spinster - like the Matron a nine-furlong affair - include Edmund A. Gann's You; Select Stable's Take Charge Lady; Sam-Son Farm's Dancethruthedawn; Amerman Racing LLC's Printemps; G. Watts Humphrey Jr.'s Victory Ride; and Helen Alexander, Dorothy Matz & Helen K. Groves' Atelier.
