Keeneland's opening day will feature a competitive group of nine 2-year-old fillies in the grade II Walmac International Alcibiades Stakes. Five of the entrants are stakes winners or stakes-placed.
The most seasoned of the group is Ruby's Reception. The filly from Larry Jones' barn has raced five times and has never run out of the money. Her biggest score was at Ellis Park in the Anna M. Fisher Debutante Stakes, but she also placed second in the Sept. 14 Kentucky Cup Juvenile Fillies.
Finishing ahead of Ruby's Reception at Turfway Park on Sept. 14 was Atlantic Ocean, who is also entered in the Alcibiades. Bob Baffert trains the filly for The Thoroughbred Corp. Baffert won the 1998 Alcibiades with Silverbulletday.
Atlantic Ocean was a $1.9 million purchase earlier this year at the Barretts March sale. The daughter of Stormy Atlantic was bred by Arthur Appleton. She has two wins in four starts.
The field for the $400,000 Alcibiades (gr. II) for 2-year-old fillies going 8 1/2 furlongs. All entrants will carry 118 pounds.
