Trainer Mark Hennig is looking for a productive Breeders' Cup preview weekend when he sends out stable stars Summer Colony and Raging Fever at Belmont Park.
Hennig's big gun is Edward P. Evans' Summer Colony, who looms as the one to beat in Saturday's $750,000 Beldame (gr. I) at Belmont. Summer Colony, widely considered the best distaff runner on the East Coast, has won nine of her last 11 starts.
Prepping for the Beldame, Summer Colony breezed five furlongs in :58 3/5 on Sunday.
"With the experiences she had this year, good and bad, we're prepared for anything," Hennig said. "Last year, people might have said she was one dimensional. But she's showed in her race with Azeri (Santa Anita's La Canada on Feb. 9) and the Delaware Handicap (a neck victory on July 21), that she doesn't have to have things go her way."
Hennig said Summer Colony's Sunday work was a little quicker than he would have liked, but said it accomplished what he wanted, a sharp, quick move.
Raging Fever, who has a record of 10-4-1 from 17 career starts, was trounced by Mandy's Gold in the Ruffian Handicap (gr. I) at Belmont on Sept. 14. However, Raging Fever sports a record of five wins and a second in seven career starts at Belmont.
"That last race is one to throw out," Hennig said. "She has never run like that, and the distance certainly isn't her best. On top of that, they went the first half in :45 1/5. You (who ran second) did well to run on that day."
Hennig will also send out Mystic Lady in the Lady's Secret Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) on the opening day of the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meet.
Mystic Lady will face the top West Coast distaff runner Azeri in the Lady's Secret.
