The top two buyers at Keeneland's recently completed September yearling sale are already topping the board at another auction. Demi O'Byrne, who spent $18,750,000 at Keeneland, bought the highest-priced horse at Tuesday's session of Tattersalls Houghton yearling sale.
The Sadler's Wells -- Darara colt was consigned by Watership Down Stud and brought £3,400,000 (about $5,176,500) from O'Byrne. According to the sales company the underbidder was Godolphin, whose representative John Ferguson signed for the second highest-priced lot, the first foal from champion Bosra Sham. The son of Rainbow Quest, also consigned by Watership, brought £1,000,000 (about $1,522,500) from Ferguson. Ferguson registered as Keeneland September's biggest buyer, spending more than $31 million for 45 horses. According to the sales company, Baron von Ullman was the underbidder on the Bosra Sham colt. Among the American buyers active at the auction were Prince Ahmed Salman's The Thoroughbred Corp., which bought a Kingmambo -- Cymbala colt for £140,000.
A total of 55 lots were catalogued to Tuesday's session. Thirty-nine of those sold for a total of £9,894,000, resulting in a £253,692 (about $386,246) average, a jump of 60% from last year's figure. The sale continues on Wednesday and Thursday
