Crafty Shaw rallied from off the pace to win the $100,000 Turfway Park Fall Championship (gr. III) Saturday at 1 1/8 mile, snapping a four-race losing streak.
The 4-year-old son of Crafty Prospector, trained by Peter Vestal, earned his first graded stakes victory away from Oaklawn Park.
Ridden by James Lopez, Crafty Shaw raced wide through the first turn while close to the leaders, found room on the outside in the final turn and got the lead at the top of the stretch. He pulled away from runner-up Rock Slide to win by three lengths. Deferred Comp was third, 1 1/4-length behind Rock Slide.
It was the third graded stakes victory for Crafty Shaw, who won the Essex Handicap (gr. III) this year and the Rebel Stakes (gr. III) in 2001, both at Oaklawn Park.
Overall, Crafty Shaw has won eight of 17 career starts and has earned $329,560 for owner Charles Cella.
Bred in Kentucky by Lance Robinson, Crafty Shaw was purchased for $130,000 by Lucky Seven Stable at the Keeneland September yearling sale in 1999.
