"He went very nice," Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel said. "I let Rudy do what he wanted to. We've still got plenty of time until the race. We'll get more serious with him later. Right now, we're just keeping him fit."
Frankel will saddle two horses in the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I) here on Sept. 28 – repeat Woodward (gr. I) winner Lido Palace and Pacific Classic (gr. I) third-place finisher Milwaukee Brew. Frankel said Lido Palace, who worked a half-mile in :49 2/5 Thursday, appears to have come out of the move in good order.
Repent, who finished second behind Medaglia d'Oro in the Travers, is also scheduled to run in the Gold Cup.
"We should get a good line on Medaglia d'Oro by seeing how Repent runs against older horses," Frankel said.
Also on the work tab from the Frankel barn Friday was Diana and Matriarch (both gr. I) winner Starine, who went six furlongs in 1:15. In her two starts this year, the 5-year-old mare has finished second both times. She had the lead in the stretch of her last start, the May 27th Gamely Breeders' Cup (gr. I) at Hollywood, but lost a photo to Astra.
"She went very good," Frankel said of the work. "She came home in :24 flat. I think she's ready to go. She's had four five-furlong works and two six-furlong works."
Starine will start in the $750,000 Flower Bowl Invitational (gr. IT) at a 1 1/4 mile on turf on September 28. She was third behind Lailani and England's Legend in last year's Flower Bowl before finishing 10th of 12 in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. I).
Frankel said he is likely to ship his Breeders' Cup starters to Chicago a week before the event.
"Getting a work over the track doesn't matter," Frankel said. "I just want them to get there and get settled."
