Edmund Gann's Medaglia d'Oro, winner of the Travers Stakes in his last start, breezed an easy five furlongs in 1:01 2/5 at Belmont Friday morning with jockey Rudy Rodriguez aboard.
The son of El Prado went his first three furlongs in :36 3/5, and galloped out six furlongs in a strong 1:14 3/5. Trainer Bobby Frankel has opted to skip the Jockey Club Gold Cup and go straight into the Breeders' Cup Classic.
"He went very nice," Frankel said. "I let Rudy do what he wanted. We've still got plenty of time until the race. We'll get more serious with him later. Right now, we're just keeping him fit."
Frankel said he should get a good line on Medaglia d'Oro after seeing Repent run in the Gold Cup. In his last start, Repent finished a gutsy second to Medaglia d'Oro in the Travers. Frankel will saddle Lido Palace and Milwaukee Brew in the Gold Cup. Lido Palace breezed a half in :49 2/5 on Thursday, and Frankel said he came out of the work in goos shape.
Another Frankel star on the work tab Friday was Starine, who breezed six furlongs in 1:15 for the Flower Bowl Handicap, run the same day as the Gold Cup. Starine finished third in last year's Flower Bowl behind Lailani and England's Legend.
"I think she's ready to go," Frankel said. "She came home in :24 flat. She's already had four five-furlong works and two six-furlong works."
