Cetewayo Top Weighted in Kentucky Cup Turf

Veteran grass star Cetewayo is the 118-pound high weight in a tough field of 12 entered for the $300,000 Kentucky Cup Turf Handicap (gr. III) at Kentucky Downs, a 1 1/2-mile test that headlines a series of four turf races at the Franklin track Saturday.

The 8-year-old son of His Majesty, owned by Dr. John A. Chandler and trained by Michael Dickinson, has won three of five starts this year, including the Stars & Stripes Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIIT) at 12 furlongs July 6 at Arlington. He has bankrolled more than $1 million in his career.

He'll be facing a field that includes Grammarian and California invader Continental Red. Grammarian edged Continental Red by a head in the Sunset Handicap (gr. II) at 1 1/2 miles at Hollywood Park July 21.

Also lining up Thursday for the Kentucky Cup card:

* Jake the Flake is a major contender for the secondary feature, the $200,000 Mile, which shapes up as as a well-matched mid-sized field. Other leading contenders include Glick, Jadada and Pyrus.

* The $100,000, Ladies Turf at a mile might be the best betting race of the series with afull field of 12 passing the entry box. La Recherche and Solvig are the likely favorites.

* Trainer Randy Morse has a top contender in the 3-year-old Mighty Beau in the $100,000 Turf Dash. Morse also has Brown Eyed Major in the six-furlong race. Other favorites are Aloha Bold, Honor Me and Red Lightning.

The Kentucky Cup and two Kentucky Downs maiden races will be combined with 10 races from Turfway Park, making for a 16-race card. The Turfway feature is the $75,000 Marfa Stakes.
