For the 96th consecutive race, Felix Monserrate's Zippy Chippy failed to reach the winner's circle, finishing fifth in a maiden special weight race at Northampton on Sunday. Sent off the 8-1 fourth choice, Zippy Chippy "bore out on the first turn" and was "outrun," according to the Equibase chart notes. The 11-year-old gelding finished less than six lengths behind winner Quincy Kid.
Zippy Chippy, who holds the modern-day record for most starts without breaking his maiden, Zippy Chippy has seven runner-up efforts and a dozen third-place finishes to his credit. He has earned $29,952. In addition to attracting a lot of publicity as a result of his futile attempt to win a race, Chippy has also been featured in sprint races against minor league baseball players the last two years.
