The Kentucky Cup, Beyond the Classic

The fields for some of Turfway's four stakes races Saturday beyond the Kentucky Cup Classic (gr. II) are shaping up nicely. Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas is scheduled to bring four horses to races, including two pointed at the Kentucky Cup Sprint (gr. III).

Lukas is expected to start Day Trader and Shah Jehan in the six-furlong event. Day Trader won the Matt Winn Stakes earlier this year. Pat Day, who was in the irons for the colt's unplaced effort in the King's Bishop (gr. I), again has the mouth. Shah Jehan has yet to capture an added-money race, but he has placed three times. Victor Espinoza will be aboard. Also expected in the sprint are stakes-placed Bold Truth, from John Ward's barn, and Carl Nafzger trainee Flying Free. Bold Truth (by Seattle Slew) is out of a full sister to Editor's Note).

Lukas and Nafzger also have horses headed to the Turfway Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. III) for fillies and mares. Lukas plans to bring Magic Storm (by Storm Cat), winner of the Monmouth Breeders' Cup Oaks (gr. II). She also placed in the Spinaway and Adirondack Stakes (gr. I and II, respectively) earlier this year. Nafzger will saddle Softly, a daughter of Binalong and Coragil. In her last start Softly was third in the Gardenia. Jim Tafel bred and owns the mare.

Post positions will be drawn Thursday for the day's card.
