Favored Wonder Again held off fast-closing Riskaverse by a half-length to win the $250,000 Garden City Breeder's Cup Handicap (gr. IT) for 3-year-old fillies Sunday at Belmont Park.
It was the fourth consecutive win for the Kentucky-bred daughter of Silver Hawk, owned and bred by John and Joan Phillips. Wonder Again, trained by James Toner, won the Lake Placid Handicap (gr. II) on a yielding turf at Saratoga Aug. 18 in her most recent race.
Final time for the 1 1/8-mile inner turf event was 1:47 1/5.
Ridden by Edgar Prado, Wonder Again was rated in third behind pacesetting Kithira and Cyclorama before splitting the leaders in the stretch and drawing away.
Riskaverse was forced to wait for room at the rail and was flying late. Likewise, third-place finisher Pertuisane was bottled up inside until late in the stretch drive.
Wonder Again is now for 4-for-7 lifetime. Her lifetime bankroll improved to more than $300,000.
The winner paid $5.40, $3.70 and $3.10. Riskaverse returned $6.70 and $4.50. Pertuisane paid $11 for the show. The $2 exacta was $39.40.
