West By West Colt Tops Canadian-Bred Yearling Sale

A West by West colt brought $165,000 (Canadian funds, $105,980 in U.S. funds) to top the Canadian-bred yearling auction at Woodbine Tuesday. Jeffrey Begg, agent, purchased the chestnut colt from Woodlands (Gail Woods), agent. The colt is the first foal produced from the 8-year-old Regal Classic mare Never Can Tell, who was a stakes-placed runner in Canada.

Fasig-Tipton conducted the sale for the first time. It previously was operated by Canadian Breeders Sales.

Fasig-Tipton reported that 151 horses were sold for a gross of $6,258,500 ($4,019,835 in U.S. funds), an average of $41,447 ($26,621), and a median of $35,000 ($22,481). The buy-back rate was a low 20.5%, with 39 of the 190 horses failing to find new homes. Last year, the 182 horses sold grossed $4,140,870 in U.S. funds and averaged $22,752. The median was $16,030.
