In spite of his sixth-place finish in the $1 million Pacific Classic (gr. I) Aug. 25, fans have War Emblem as the 7-2 favorite Friday, the first day of the final pool for $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) Future Bet.
Perhaps indicating some consensus as the Oct. 26 Breeders' Cup Thoroughbred Championships at Arlington Park gets closer, the field entry, at 10-1 in the first Classic future pool a month ago, is 25-1 this time around.
Advance betting on the Classic, The $2 million Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) and the $1 million Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) continues through 7 p.m. (ET) on Sept. 2. The numbers are sure to change significantly. Only $7,297 was wagered in the first day of the Classic pool.
Repent, whose game second-place finish to Medaglia d'Oro in the Travers Stakes (gr. I) for 3-year-olds Aug. 24 came after nearly a four-month layoff, is second in the Future Bet for the Classic at 5-1. Medaglia d'Oro, along with Milwaukee Brew, are listed at 8-1. Pacific Classic winner Came Home is 10-1. He was 8-1 in the opening pool.
Street Cry, the leader in pool one, has fallen from 6-1 to 15-1 following a second-place finish to record-setting Left Bank in the 1 1/8-mile Whitney (gr. I) at Saratoga Aug. 3. Sakhee, narrow loser to Tiznow in last year's race, is 50-1.
In the 1 1/8 mile Distaff, where just $3,848 was wagered Friday, Azeri is 9-5. She was the 4-1 favorite in Pool One. Summer Colony, expected to vie for favoritism following her 4 1/2-length triumph in the Personal Ensign (gr. I) at Saratoga Aug. 23 and an earlier win over Azeri in February, is instead at 8-1. The horse she beat in the Personal Ensign, Dancethruthedawn, is 7-1. The Alabama (gr. I) winner at Saratoga Aug. 17, Farda Amiga, is the 5-1 second choice, while Bella Bellucci is 9-1. The field for the Distaff is 16-1.
In the 6-furlong Sprint , Gygistar has taken command of what was a wide open field in Pool 1. The 3-year-old winner of the King's Bishop at Saratoga Aug. 24 is 2-1. He was 15-1 in Pool 1. The filly, Xtra Heat, is the 5-1 second choice, while defending champion Squirtle Squirt, out of action since Jan. 27, is 9-1. Orientate, 8-1 in Pool 1, is currently 12-1. Squirtle Squirt and Orientate are scheduled to meet this weekend in the Forego (gr. I) at Saratoga. The field for the sprint is 14-1.
