Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps, longtime chairman of The Jockey Club, has been honored with the Industry Service Award by the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association.
TOBA cited Phipps' role in funding, through The Jockey Club, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and its Racing Integrity and Drug Testing Task Force.
"The NTRA has helped invigorate the industry and increase the fan base," TOBA president Dan Metzger said. "Mr. Phipps' support through The Jockey Club's major financial contribution was essential to the NTRA's very existence."
Metzger also cited Phipps' leadership in such areas as improving the global marketing of Thoroughbred racing and common pooling of wagers; a "massive improvement in the nuts-and-bolts issues of speedy registration and DNA verifying of Thoroughbreds"; and his support of government relations through his leadership role in the American Horse Council.
Phipps has served as chairman of The Jockey Club since 1983. He also serves as a board member for the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation and The Jockey Club Information Systems.
Before he took the helm of The Jockey Club, Phipps was chairman of the board of the New York Racing Association from 1976 until 1983.
Phipps has been a director on the King Ranch board since 1996 and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association since 1997, as well as a governor and member of several committees for The New York and Presbyterian Hospitals.
Phipps and his family have campaigned numerous stakes winners, including Inside Information, the champion older filly or mare of 1995, and Rhythm, the champion 2-year-old colt of 1989. He has said that Rhythm's victory in the 1990 Travers Stakes, and Personal Ensign's come-from-behind triumph in the 1988 Breeders' Cup Distaff, are his most memorable moments in Thoroughbred racing.
Phipps will be honored by TOBA at its National Awards Dinner Sept. 6 at Bill Casner & Kenny Troutt's WinStar Farm. Grammy Award winner winner Clint Black will provide the entertainment. Tickets for the event may be obtained by calling 888–606-TOBA.
