A top price of $180,000 was paid by John Oxley for a Defrere colt to top Wednesday's session of the Keeneland September yearling sale. The colt, produced from the Devil's Bag mare Roleo, was consigned by Carmichael Sales, agent for Aberdeen Partnership. Keeneland reported 287 horses sold Wednesday for $5,338,200, with the $18,600 average price well above the $12,445 average for 297 horses that grossed $3,696,100 during the comparable session one year ago.

With three days remaining in the marathon sale, Keeneland has sold 2,684 horses for a record $283,804,000 and an average price of $105,739. Through the same number of sessions in 1999, 2,801 yearlings had been sold for $231,006,300 and an average price of $82,473.
