Twenty-year-old Kristin Mulhall was training her string of 15 horses at Del Mar Wednesday morning as if nothing special had happened to her. But her joy over winning her first ever race as a trainer Monday was just slightly under the surface.

Her winner, The Thoroughbred Corp.'s Atarama, took the lead late in the stretch of the featured seventh race and drew off to an impressive 1 1/2-length victory under jockey Victor Espinoza. The 3-year-olds were traveling 1 1/16 miles on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course.

It was Mulhall's fifth starter of the meeting, and 10th overall. Her father, former trainer and now president of The Thoroughbred Corp., Richard Mulhall, was present," Kristin Mulhall said. "He was very excited," she said. "We were all very excited and happy."

She got her trainer's license in mid-summer and began conditioning horses at Hollywood Park. The young trainer expects to run several more horses at Del Mar before the season ends Wednesday, Sept. 11.
