Surgery Planned For Bosque Redondo

Bosque Redondo, who suffered a sesamoid fracture of his right ankle and a condylar fracture of the cannon bone when he finished fifth in the Aug. 25 Pacific Classic Stakes (gr. I) at Del Mar, will have surgery Tuesday night at the Equine Medical Center in Cypress, Calif. to repair the injuries.

Dr. C. Wayne McIlwraith is flying from Colorado to perform the surgery. During surgery, the ankle joint will be fused and held together with a metal plate.

The biggest concern following surgery will be the development of laminitis, a disease brought on by poor circulation in a horse's lower limbs.

According to clinic personal, Bosque Redondo is resting comfortably and getting up and down with ease. He is still wearing a metal split that was placed on him following the injury.

The son of Mane Minister was shipped to the Equine Medical Center on Monday from the Del Mar barn of trainer Jenine Sahadi.

Trainer Paco Gonzalez conditions homebreds Bosque Redondo and Pacific Classic winner Came Home for John Toffan and Trudy McCaffery.

Five-year-old Bosque Redondo, out of the Cox's Ridge mare, Pima, won six of 17 career starts, including the San Berardino Handicap (gr. II) on April 6. He earned $478,470.
