Kachamandi took advantage of a solid pace and a perfectly-timed ride by Patrick Valenzuela to score a length victory in the featured Harry F. Brubaker Handicap at Del Mar Friday.

Owned Miraleste, Nakkashian and Roberts, the winner, a 5-year-old gelding who started his career in his native Chile, covered the mile and one-sixteenth on turf in a rapid 1:40.57. He returned $17.60 for the victory and picked up a check for $45,675 from a gross purse of $76,125.

Finishing second in the turf test was Arnold Zetcher's Nicobar, who had a nose on Edmund Gann's 9-5 favorite, Fateful Dream.

Kachamandi won the eighth race of his career in his 40th start. Two of those victories have come in the U.S. this year following his importation from Chile last fall. His lifetime bankroll now reads $160,886.

The victory was win No. 27 on day 27 at the meet for leading rider, Valenzuela, who is in the midst of a highly successful comeback. The 39-year-old rider also won the day's fourth race aboard Big Shakespeare ($9).

Attendance for the day was 16,390.
