Slew o' Gold, Three Chimneys Farm stallion, has been pensioned.
Slew o' Gold, who set the racing and breeding world abuzz with four grade/group I winners from his first crop, has been pensioned after failing to impregnate a single mare this year. The 22-year-old son of Seattle Slew stood his entire career at Robert N. Clay's Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky., and will remain there. Mickey and Karen Taylor, who raced Seattle Slew in partnership and Slew o' Gold as part of Equusequity Stable, own an interest in him.

"His fertility declined at which point we knew we had to stop with him," said farm general manager Dan Rosenberg. "Physically, he's fine. He's a great, great horse and a great favorite of mine."

Slew o' Gold, a champion at three and four in 1983-84, started off with foals of 1986 with multiple grade I winners Awe Inspiring, Gorgeous, and Tactile, and English group I winner and champion Golden Opinion. Millionaire Gorgeous ran second in the 1989 Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I). His second crop included grade I winners Thirty Six Red, who placed in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) and Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), and Dr. Root. Overall, Slew o' Gold was represented by a total of 11 stakes winners from this first two crops.

After that, things slacked off and it wasn't until several years later that another grade I winner, Dramatic Gold, appeared. Foaled in 1991, Dramatic Gold is his sire's leading earner, with $2.5 million. He placed in the 1994 Breeders' Cup Classic.

Slew o' Gold, a half-brother to Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Coastal, was bred by the Hancock family's Claiborne Farm and produced from the Buckpasser mare Alluvial. He won consecutive runnings of the Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I) and Woodward Stakes (gr. I), and his other scores included grade I wins in the Marlboro Cup Invitational Handicap and Wood Memorial Stakes. He finished third in the inaugural Breeders' Cup Classic, but was moved to second following the disqualification of runner-up finisher Gate Dancer. He was retired with a dozen wins from 21 starts and $3,533,534 in earnings.

Slew o' Gold is represented by 28 stakes winners and the earners of $25 million.
