Mario Pino's quest for 5,000 career victories reached single digits when the veteran jockey rode two winners on Thursday's card at Laurel Park, giving him 4,991.
"Now I'm starting to think about it with nine to go," said Pino, who would become the 18th rider in history to reach the 5,000-win plateau.
The 40-year old had back-to-back winners for Hall of Fame trainer Bud Delp with Valid ($7.80) and Running Brush ($6.60) in the second and third races.
The Laurel summer meet concludes Friday with Pino tied with Horatio Karamanos as leading rider with 30 wins apiece.
The mark will have to wait awhile, though.
Instead of riding at the Timonium State Fair meet that opens on Saturday, he will serve a seven-day suspension for a riding infraction that occurred earlier. Before the Pimlico fall meet opens on September 4, he will have two mounts at Delaware Park on August 31.
"I'm getting excited and I have time off to think about it," added Pino. "I'll get pumped up when we get back to Pimlico and it will be fun."
