Zippy Chippy, the hapless Thoroughbred who has set a modern-day record of futility with no victories in 93 starts, will race against a minor league ballplayer again Thursday night in an exhibition at Rochester's (New York) Frontier Park.
Thursday's race between the horse and Rochester Red Wings second baseman Brian Roberts will be the third time he has raced against a human. In the first such race, Rochester outfielder Jose Herrera defeated Zippy Chippy in a 40-yard race. In August 2001, Zippy Chippy beat outfielder Darnell McDonald in a 50-yard race over the Frontier Park grass outfield.
McDonald was originally scheduled for a rematch against Zippy Chippy Thursday night, but Roberts replaced the player after McDonald injured a leg in a game Monday night. Thursday's exhibition precedes the Red Wings-Buffalo Bisons game.
