The Agence Fraincais August yearling sale at Deauville, France entered its final two days Tuesday with the gross and average down from last year's sale.
According to the sales company, 231 horses had sold for a gross of €23,270,000 (about $22,721,759) and average of €100,736 ($98,363). Through the same period one year ago (when the figures were reported in French Francs before converting to Euros), 222 horses had sold for the equivalent of €31,524,170 and an average of €142,000.
"The international market is now very difficult," said Agence Francais president Augier, "but there is a strong middle market. As soon as there is an excellent individual in the ring, there are numerous bidders and the price rises quickly."
The sale has been highlighted by a record price of €2-million paid by Gainsborough Stud to purchase a filly by Indian Ridge produced from Maximova. The price exceeds the previous record 10-million French Francs paid by Gainsborough for Melikah in 1998.
