Hollywood Completes Turf Course Renovation
Hollywood Park has completed a renovation of the one-mile oval portion of its Lakeside Turf Course. The project involved the installation of new Bermuda sod from rail-to-rail around the oval. After the existing sod was stripped, the base was aerated and sand was added to improve drainage on the course, which was originally designed for summer racing only. The cost of the project was not disclosed."The Hollywood Park turf course has always been a Bermuda course," general manager Eual G. Wyatt Jr. said. "Periodically you need to replenish the Bermuda. In addition, we altered the top layer for the purpose of providing a kinder surface."Hollywood Park most recently installed new sod in two phases, with the inner portion of the course done in 1995 and the outer portion in 1996. No work was done on the base at that time. The current project was completed two weeks earlier in the year compared with work done in the mid-1990s, giving the new sod ample time to take root prior to the autumn meet, which begins Nov. 6. The course is expected to be opened for workouts on Nov. 3.
