Trainer John Veitch ended a long dry spell in New York racing when Shortleaf Stable's Vasquez posted a game nose victory over Western Rush in the sixth race at Saratoga on Thursday.

The victory by the homebred racing for John Ed Anthony marked the first win in New York for Veitch since he saddled Sampson to win at Aqueduct on Dec. 10, 1998. Since that time, Veitch had gone 0-31 in New York. In the interim, he had also trained in the United Arab Emirates and had served as a racing commentator.

A 2-year-old daughter of Coronado's Quest making her career debut, Vasquez paid $15.20 to win while racing the 5 furlongs in : 59.47. Based on her performance Thursday, Veitch said he would nominate the filly to the Aug. 31 Spinaway (gr. I) at Saratoga.
