Edited release from Churchill Downs
Churchill Downs will offer a special separate pool "Arlington Million Pick 3" to racing fans at racetracks and off-track betting facilities in Kentucky and Indiana on Saturday, Aug. 17.

The wager will be offered as a "special event" in the two states because of a software problem that prohibits Kentucky and Indiana tracks and OTB's from offering a similar Pick 3 offered by Arlington Park that will link the three Grade I races on Saturday's Arlington Million card: the Secretariat, the Beverly D., and the Arlington Million. Arlington Park, which has a different tote provider than the Kentucky and Indiana outlets, will link its three races in a Pick 3 wager although they will be run as the 7th (Beverly D.), 9th (Arlington Million) and 11th (Secretariat) races.

Kentucky and Indiana facilities are unable to offer the wager because the tote company that serves those outlets, United Tote, does not possess the software to process a Pick 3 on non-successive races while handling wagers on all other races at Arlington.

The special event "Arlington Million Pick 3" offered in Kentucky and Indiana will have a takeout rate of 15 percent, which is lower than the 25 percent takeout on the Arlington Park wager or the 22 percent takeout on a similar wager at Ellis Park. It is a separate pool wager, so the winning payout on the Pick 3 in Kentucky and Indiana will be different than the payout on Arlington Park's wager.

"We apologize to racing fans throughout Kentucky and Indiana who again are unable to wager on the Pick 3 offered by Arlington Park, but we hope that this special event wager offered in those states will be a very attractive alternative," said John Long, interim president of Churchill Downs. "We are confident that this software issue will be corrected by the time Arlington Million Day rolls around next year. In the interim, we believe that this weekend's special event "Arlington Million Pick 3" and its very low takeout rate will provide an exciting and enjoyable wagering opportunity to simulcast patrons in Kentucky and Indiana."

Fans in the two states who are TVG customers will be able wager into Arlington Park's commingled pool on its Pick 3.
