Tattersalls Changing Sales Dates Next Year

Tattersalls will make major changes to its aales dates in 2003. The British firm's flagship Tattersalls Houghton yearling sale will take place one week earlier than at present, and the Tattersalls October yearling sale will move to the week currently occupied by Houghton.

In addition, the Tattersalls Autumn yearling sale will move to the week vacated by the October yearling sale, and it will be renamed the Tattersalls October yearling sale part 2. , The Tattersalls autumn horses in training sale will remain as it stands in the last week of October. The Tattersalls (Ireland) september yearling sale will also be held a week earlier, beginning September 16.

The 2003 Houghton yearling sale will be conducted on Wednesday, Sept. 24 and Thursday, Sept. 25, with racing at Newmarket on Tuesday Sept. 23 and the three-day Ascot Festival of Racing beginning the day after the Houghton ends. The October yearling sale will begin five days after the conclusion of tHoughton on Tuesday, Sept. 30 and end on Saturday, Oct. 4.
The change has been facilitated by the decision of Newmarket to reduce the Cambridgeshire Meeting from four days to three days, beginning on Thurday, Oct. 2 after the first two days of the October yearling Sale.

Commenting on the changes, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said;

"The changes make perfect commercial sense not only for Tattersalls, but also for our vendors and purchasers," said Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony. "We have felt for a long time that we have been squeezing too many major sales into too few days, and the changes will allow us much greater flexibility in both the long and short term. Both the Houghton and October yearling sales have traditionally taken place either wholly or partly clashing with racing at Newmarket,, and as a result, we have always had to juggle numbers and timings around factors outside our control. We have always enjoyed fantastic cooperation from Newmarket Racecourse but with foal crops at record levels this task has become increasingly difficult in recent years. The decision of Newmarket Racecourse to change the Cambridgeshire Meeting from four to three days presented the ideal opportunity to rearrange the Houghton and October yearling sales, as well as to accommodate the new October yearling sale part 2."

The revised schedule will mean that next year the new √ęTattersalls October Yearling Sale Part 2√≠ will begin on Wednesday 15th October, while the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale will take place from Monday 27th to Thursday 30th October.

Mahony continued;

"As well as providing far greater flexibility for our two premier yearling sales and positioning them either side of the prestigious Ascot Festival of Racing, the new dates will also give a strong profile to the new October Yearling Sale Part 2, and allow us to have four full days for the Autumn Horses in Training Sale, again to the benefit of all concerned."
