A bay filly from the first crop of champion sprinter Artax brought the top price of $170,000 during the first session of Fasig-Tipton's preferred New York-bred yearling sale Sunday night at Saratoga. Consigned by Becky Merkel, agent, the filly was purchased by Crupi New Castle Farm, a Florida-based pinhooking operation. Produced from the 11-year-old winning Premiership mare Made for Satin, the filly is a half-sister to Fair Grounds stakes winner Mapp Hill (by Valid Expectations). In all, 51 yearlings were sold for a gross of $2,478,000, an average of $48,588, and a median of $35,000. The buy-back rate was 36.3%, with 29 of the 80 horses offered failing to find new homes. Eight yearlings brought six-figure prices. The sale's second and final session is scheduled for Monday night, beginning at 7:30 p.m. (EDT).
