Jay Em Ess Stable's Miss Pickums blew by the leaders on the final turn en route to a 4 1/2-length victory in the $50,000 Mariah's Storm Handicap Sunday at Arlington Park.
The Paul McGee-trained daughter of Afternoon Deelites covered the 1 1/8 miles over a fast track in 1:51.29.
Rene Douglas rode the 4-year-old filly to victory to earn a sweep of the weekend stakes races. On Saturday, the Panamanian guided John Franks & Peter Abruzzo's Lost At Sea to victory in the Singapore Plate (gr. IIi). It was Douglas' eighth stakes win of the current meeting.
"She's a very nice filly," said Douglas of Miss Pickums. "Once she made the lead she started to look around. So I had to hit her once to keep her mind on her business. I hated to do it because she's so kind. After that she just did everything by herself."
Leslie rallied from the back to finish second in the field of seven fillies and mares. It was another neck back to Magic Motel, followed by Lunar Star, Harlan Ash and the pacesetters, Katy Kat and Applesolutely.
Miss Pickums paid $6.80, $3.20 and $3.40 (prices OK). Leslie returned $3.20 and $3.20. Magic Motel paid $6.40.
