Although trainer Mel Stute believes she is versatile enough not to have to be on the lead, Buffythecenterfold certainly seems to be the one to catch in Saturday's $150,000 Sorrento Stakes (gr. II) for 2-year-old fillies at 6 1/2 furlongs on the main track.

A field of nine has been entered in the 34th running of the Sorrento.

Frank Stronach and Allen Brian, following Stronach's majority purchase earlier in the week, now own the daughter of Capote. The filly has shown speed in both of her races. Just as importantly, she has shown the sort of determination that has turned back threats each time.

In her maiden outing, Buffythecenterfold found herself second to Tricks Her as they battled down the stretch, but she pressed forward to win by a length. In winning the Landaluce Stakjes (gr. III) at Hollywood Park in her second start, the filly was hounded by Himalayan as they went head-and-head most of the way, before the Stute trainee drew off to win by a length, again over Tricks Her.

Himalayan and Tricks Her, who is still a maiden, are back again as her chief antagonists. This time, "Buffy," as co-high weight in the race at 121, will spot the David Hofmans trainee six pounds

Something of an unknown quantity in the race is Indy Groove, who won at first asking at Arlington Park before shipping to Del Mar with a string trained by Tom Proctor and under the guidance of brother "Hap" Proctor. In her victory, the daughter of A.P. Indy went five furlongs in :58 4/5.
