Day Poised to Top McCarron's Earnings Mark

Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day enters Thursday's action just $131,031 behind the recently retired Chris McCarron on horse racing's list of all-time leading jockeys by purse earnings.

Horses ridden by McCarron accounted for $264,351,679 in purse winnings during his illustrious career. Pat Day sits in second place with $264,220,648.

With just two mounts on today's Saratoga card and five on tomorrow's, it is unlikely that Day will eclipse McCarron's mark before the weekend.

On Saturday, however, Day will ride With Anticipation, one of the favorites in Saratoga's $500,000 Sword Dancer Invitational Handicap (gr. I). A win by With Anticipation would bring in $300,000, which would quickly put Day over the top. Even a second place finish would be worth $100,000. So history could well be made before the week is out.

Once Day eclipses McCarron's earnings record, he can set his sights on racing's all-time win record. The leader, the still-active Laffit Pincay Jr. sits atop the heap with 9,400 race victories through Wednesday. Second is the legendary Bill Shoemaker, who retired with 8,833 wins, and third is Day with 8,289 triumphs to his credit.
