Del Mar announced a 5% increase in overnight purses for the remainder of its 43-day meeting. The increase is retroactive to the beginning of racing on July 24. Through the first two weeks of the summer session (12 racing days), total handle was up 11.4%. A key part of that boost was an on-track handle increase of 12.3%, aided by an on-track attendance rise of 6.6%. Advanced Deposit Wagering has averaged approximately $600,000 per day through the first two weeks, contributing approximately $20,000 per day to the track's purses. Del Mar partnered with TVG and Youbet.com to provide on-line and telephone wagering on its races for the first time in 2002."We are pleased and encouraged by the results of our meet so far," said Del Mar president and general manager Joe Harper. "The purse increase is the best yardstick of all for us and our horsemen. If purses are up, it means the racing is competitive and the fans are responding to it. It means everyone is a winner."Racing continues at Del Mar through Wednesday, September 11.
