Leading Japanese Sire Sunday Silence in Critical Condition

Leading Japanese stallion Sunday Silence, who underwent the latest of three operations July 18 at the Shadai Horse Clinic in Japan, is in critical condition after showing signs of laminitis, according to Teruya Yoshida of Shadai Stallion Station. The most recent operation was performed after the horse contracted bacterial peritendinitis in his right forelimb.

The 16-year-old son of Halo, who covered more than 130 mares this year, was taken out of stallion duty May 10 because of inflammation in his right front leg.

The 1989 Kentucky Derby winner and Horse of the Year in North America, Sunday Silence has ranked as Japan's leading sire by year-end progeny earnings since 1995. Through June 30, he was represented by the earners of $29,306,554, more than double the total of $13,795,605 for runner-up Brian's Time (by Roberto).
