Lexicon tracked Bay Runner through opening fractions of :21.94 and :44.26, before pulling away to a two-length win over Men's Exclusive in the $177,500 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. III) Saturday at Bay Meadows. Under jockey Russell Baze, Mr. and Mrs. Jerome S. Moss's 5-year-old homebred completed the six-furlong race in 1:09.19 on a fast track. Dixie Dot Com finished third, followed by Falkenburg and Bay Runner.

The win earned the Richard Mandella trainee $110,000, and brings his career record to nine wins from 26 starts. Lexicon's (Conquistador Cielo--Felidia, by Golden Fleece) last stakes win came in the Ancient Title Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) in October 1999. Following that win, he finished ninth in the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I). In three prior attempts in stakes races this year, he finished fourth in the Potrero Grande Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II), and third in both the Triple Bend Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) and the Bing Crosby Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II).

As the betting favorite, Lexicon paid $5.40, $3, and $2.40. The $1 exacta combination returned $10.20. (Chart, Equibase)
