Nunatall, red cap and silks, holds off Guana in the Lake George.
Nunatall took the lead with a furlong to go Monday and then held off two challengers for a head victory over Smok'n Frolic in the $115,000 Lake George Stakes at Saratoga Race Course.
Smok'n Frolic set a blistering pace of :45 4/5 for a half-mile, but Nunatall swung to the outside coming off the turn and edged past the leader.
Guana and Mariensky challenged late but Nunatall held on to win the turf race for 3-year-old fillies. The time for 1 1/16 miles was 1:40 3/5.
``I tried to relax her in the beginning, but she was trying to get out a little on the (first) turn,'' jockey Jorge Chavez said. ``At the end, when I asked, I still had horse.''
Nunatall paid $5.50, $3.40 and $3.10. Guana paid $7.50 and $4.80, while Mariensky, who was another neck behind Guana, paid $4 to show. A Night Shift filly, Nunatall has three wins and four placings from nine starts.
Owner Edmund Gann and trainer Bobby Frankel combined to win Saturday's $250,000 Test Stakes with You, another 3-year-old filly. It was Frankel's third stakes victory at Saratoga in three days as he also won the Diana Handicap on Saturday.
"Things are going well," Frankel said. "I thought I brought the right horses here. I've learned to train better the older I get."
