Prominent Breeder Lord Weinstock Dead at 77

Lord Arnold Weinstock of England has died, according to The Racing Post. The publication reported the 77-year-old resident of London died at his home Tuesday. Weinstock has had success as an owner and a breeder both in Europe, where he was among the industry's leaders, and in the United States.

Weinstock, with his father-in-law Sir Michael Sobell, purchased Ballymacoll Stud in County Meath, Ireland, in 1960. Later, his son, the late Lord Simon Weinstock joined the operation.

To date Ballymacoll bred 14 grade or group I winners, 27 other group or graded winners, and 32 listed stakes winners. Among them are 1979 Epsom Derby (Eng-I) winner Troy, 1996 Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) winner Pilsudski, and 1995 Irish Two Thousand Guineas (Ire-I) winner Spectrum. Weinstock bred and raced Fastness in Europe, then sold the horse to the Rays' Evergreen Farms, for whom he won the grade I Eddie Read Handicap. One of his most recent standouts was Golan, winner of last year's Prix Niel Casino Barriere d'Enghien Les Bains (Fr-II).

Weinstock had horses in training with Michael Stoute and Peter Chapple-Hyam had also previously trained stakes winners for his operation.
