When Caller One won Turfway Park's six-furlong Hansel Stakes by 10 lengths in his 3-year-old debut in March, he stamped himself as one of the top sophomore sprinters in the country. He returns to Turfway on Saturday to face seven other 3-year-olds as the odds-on choice in the Kentucky Cup Sprint (gr. II).
Amsterdam Stakes (gr. III) winner Personal First and Millencolin, third-place finisher in the King's Bishop Stakes (gr. I), will likely vie for second-favoritism. After winning his 2000 debut in a six-furlong race, Padua Stables and Anne Sanan's Millencolin was stretched out in two-turn races before turning back to sprints in the King's Bishop. The D. Wayne Lukas trainee is 5-2 on the morning line.
Both the Kentucky Cup Sprint and Kentucky Cup Classic (gr. II) will be broadcast by ESPN2 as part of a one-hour broadcast also featuring the Woodward Stakes (gr. I) from Belmont Park. The broadcast begins at 4:00 p.m. (EDT).
The field for the six-furlong Kentucky Cup Sprint -- with jockeys, weights, and morning-line odds -- will consist of:
1--Millencolin, Pat Day, 116, 5-2
2--Caller One, Kent Desormeaux, 120, 4-5
3--Harley Quinn, Jorge Chavez, 114, 15-1
4--Personal First, Shane Sellers, 122, 3-1
5--Advanced Edition, Calvin Borel, 114, 30-1
6--Sligo Creek, Danny Cox, 114, 30-1
7--Kings Command, Robby Albarado, 116, 12-1
8--Number One Sheikh, Rafael Estrella, 114, 30-1
