Sheikh Hamdan's homebred champion and stallion Nashwan was euthanized July 19 because of complications following what was expected to be a minor operation on his right hind leg. The 16-year-old son of Blushing Groom stood at Nunnery Stud, owned by Sheikh Hamdan's Shadwell Estate Company.Nashwan's feat of winning the group I Two Thousand Guineas, Epsom Derby, Eclipse Stakes, and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes in the same season remains unequaled. He was England's champion 3-year-old at 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 furlongs that year in 1989, with his impost of 131 pounds being eight pounds higher than his closest rival. Nashwan, who also was a stakes winner in England at two and group-placed in France the following year, was retied with six wins from seven starts and $1,447.003 in earnings. One of six stakes winners produced from his champion dam, Height of Fashion (by Bustino), Nashwan is represented by 27 stakes winners, including multiple European champion Swain. A $3.7-million earner, Swain won two runnings of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes. He stands at the Shadwell division near Lexington. Swain's other top runners include Eclipse Award winner Wandesta.Shadwell dealt with loss of Nashwan's half-brother, Unfuwain, earlier this year.
