Smile Kicks off Summit of Speed

Saturday's ninth race at Calder, the $400,000 Smile Sprint Handicap, sets off a four-race $1.3 million windfall for some of the nation's top sprinters. With the loss of Caller One to injury, 4-year-olds Crafty C. T. and Orientate headline the Smile. Both horses are are shipping to Florida to take advantage of Calder's fabulous purses for speedsters.

Favored Orientate, who is 2-1 in the morning line, won the June 29 Aristides Handicap (gr. III) at Churchill Downs in his last outing. He topped his four rivals by 4 1/2 lengths that day in the 6 1/2-furlong event.

Crafty C. T. finished third in his last start, the May 27 Metropolitan Handicap (gr. I). Last year the son of Crafty Prospector won the grade II San Rafael Stakes at Santa Anita.

The local hope in the Smile, Junior Deputy, is trained by David Fawkes, who saddled Forty One Carats to win the 2000 edition of the race.
