The Thoroughbred Corp.'s War Emblem continued his preparation for the Aug. 4 Haskell Invitational Handicap (gr. I) at Monmouth Park, working five furlongs Tuesday morning at Santa Anita in 1:01 4/5 under regular exercise rider Dana Barnes.
"He was just cruising," said trainer Bob Baffert, who announced last Friday that the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner would return in the Haskell, his first start since a disappointing eighth-place finish in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) that ended his Triple Crown hopes.
"Last time he was a little more aggressive," the trainer said of War Emblem, referring to a half-mile breeze on July 2. "Today he went off easy. This horse is very fit. He doesn't need much."
Baffert said War Emblem probably would ship to Monmouth Park from Southern California four or five days before the Haskell. The trainer will arrive the afternoon of the race, following his wedding to Jill Moss the previous night in San Diego.
