Jockey Jerry Bailey made a successful foray to the West Coast from his New York base Wednesday, riding Gary Garber's Flame Thrower to a head victory over Godolphin Racing's Street Cry in the Del Mar Futurity. The winner, a son of Saint Ballado, completed the seven furlongs in 1:22 as he remained undefeated in three career starts, all at Del Mar. In his two previous efforts, Flame Thrower was ridden by Corey Nakatani to victories in a maiden special test and in the Best Pal Stakes (gr. III).

Flame Thrower returned $4.00 as the even money favorite and combined with the runner-up for a $5.70 exacta ($1.00). The winner's $150,000 purse improved his career bankroll to $268,200. Arabian Light, also trained by Baffert, finished third, and Baffert's third entrant in the closing-day feature, Glorious Bid, was sixth.
