Clearly a Queen upset 3-5 favorite Siringas to win Sunday's Matchmaker Handicap (gr. IIT) at Monmouth Park, coming from just off the pace under Eibar Coa to win by two lengths.
Trained by Teresa Pompay, the John Franks homebred by Lucky North out of Cryptoqueen, by Cryptoclearance, was winning for the eighth time in 27 lifetime starts. She settled into third position early, while Platinum Tiara carved out fractions of :23.77, :48.02, 1:11.48, and 1:36.03. Platinum Tiara had built as much as a five-length lead, but it evaporated at the eighth pole as Clearly a Queen, who had saved ground throughout moved up to challenge. She held sway down the stretch to beat Siringas, finishing the nine furlongs on firm turf in 1:47.76 and paying $14.20 to win. Siringas finished a neck in front of Platinum Tiara, with Autumn Rhythm fourth.
Pompay gave no indication where Clearly a Queen would go next.
