An abscess caused by a stone bruise has knocked Key Lory out of Saturday's $500,000 United Nation's Handicap (gr. IT) at Monmouth Park, trainer Dennis Manning reported Friday.
"I'm really down about this," Manning said. "I've been planning to run him the United Nations for months. But at least I know he'll be okay in a week or so."
Manning said Key Lory, owned by Mac Fehsenfeld, had suffered a stone bruise last week, but that it appeared to be disappearing. The horse galloped Thursday morning and all appeared well.
"He looked good, so I called the racing office and entered him," Manning said. "About an hour later, my assistant came and said, 'You'd better look at Key Lory.' When I looked in his stall, he was holding his right front foot up. It looks like an abscess has been building, and he just got lamer as the day went along. We're just waiting for the abscess to pop. Once that happens, we can clean it out, treat him with antibiotics and he'll be fine."
Manning said that if Key Lory recovers completely in the next few weeks, he will consider running the 8-year-old in the Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga on July 26.
The slight favorite in the 1 1/8-mile test is Denon, trained by Bobby Frankel. The 4-year-old son of Pleasant Colony comes into the race off a 1 1/4-length victory in the Charlie Whittingham Handicap (gr. IT) at Hollywood Park on June 15. Frankel won this race last year with Senure.
Denon faces tough competition from Suances, back-to-back winner of the San Francisco Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. IIT) and the Dallas Turf Cup Handicap. The 5-year-old son of Most Welcome won five consecutive races, a race each in group I and group III company, in Spain and France before coming to the United States.
The field for the United Nations is as follows:
1) Deputy Strike, Dale Beckner, 15-1
2) Ready to Roll, Harry Vega, 20-1
3) Crash Course, Jose Velez Jr., 10-1
4) Blazing Fury, Jose Santos, 6-1
5) Sarafan, Eibar Coa, 5-1
6) Denon, Garrett Gomez, 5-2
7) Suances, David Flores, 7-2
8) With Anticipation, Pat Day, 3-1
